The culmination of years spent honing his craft since a child, Chicago-based Urban Gospel artist Aaron Sledge releases his self-titled EMI Gospel debut today. A 6-track value-priced EP is available in stores, while an expanded 13-track version is available exclusively via digital retailers such as iTunes and Amazon MP3. Both editions include the standout cuts “Did It All For Me”, currently impacting radio, and the guitar-laced, high-energy “Extra Mile”.
Written out of a variety of personal experiences and life challenges, Sledge believes the songs on AARON SLEDGE echo the heart of God to this generation in a sound and language they understand. “God is so much bigger than the boxes we try to put Him into, and in spite of where you are in your life, God is always present in your situation,” says Sledge. “I hope people hear that theme through all the songs on the project.”
Growing up actively involved in the music at his local church, the foundation of his parents’ faith wasn’t enough to keep him grounded when he came face to face with real life in his early teens. “I started seeing friends actually die from trying to be in the streets, and it shook me,” says Sledge of his journey to personal faith. “Suddenly, my parents’ faith wasn’t enough, and I found a life in Christ for myself.”
It was shortly after this time that Sledge began writing and producing for local Chicago-area artists. The time spend fine-tuning his abilities in the church would eventually prepare him to work with artists ranging from Ramsey Lewis, Smokie Norful and Yolanda Adams to Mario, Tyrese and Nelly.
While Sledge’s writing, arranging, producing and performing credentials are already extensive, he knows that he is here simply to be a conduit to draw people to real life in Christ. “I believe that God is using my music to rescue and recover those who are lost, wounded and have exhausted themselves in a search for change,” he says. “I have found my life in Christ, and I hope that is reflected in these songs.”
